It’s hard to believe, but there’s just two more weeks and the Peoria Hot Dog Wars will have ended. Today’s battle ground takes place in Washington, Illinois at the Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland. It’s a total random choice, I’ve heard nothing good or bad about this ice cream shack, but I haven’t been to Washington, Illinois for over twenty years, so I thought it would be nice to go check out a hot dog or two there and see how they stack up against the current victor in Peoria’s Hot Dog Wars, The Hofbrau House. Ringo...by now, you should know what to do. Khaaaaaan!
Off we go into the wild blue yonder in search of a few good hot dogs.
Oh shit, look what's up ahead...
Time for a little white-knuckled driving as I think we all know by now about my phobia about driving over bridges.
Once again, through the miracle of the world wide internets thingy you're spared a sweat-soaked ride over the bridge and here we are at The Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland in Washington, Illinois.
Here's a shot of the shack from the front of the place.
And here's a photo from yet another angle. Okay, I believe we've looked at the Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland from all sides now. From up and down and still somehow, it's the Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland's illusions I recall. I really don't know the Ice Cream Shack of Sunnyland at all. Sob!
Wow, look at the menu they have outside here! How do they fit all these items into that one little shack?
Hot dog!
Let's step up to the window and order...hey look, it's an unexpected half of an ordering window obligatory mirror shot. Woo hoo!
Here's Nathan who took our order. He told me the Ice Cream Shack has been here on the block for quite some time here in Washington.
If you don't want to get out of your car, they have a handy-dandy drive moo...I mean drive through window.
And here it is in action!
Don't try and milk this guy or you might get a splinter instead of milk.
Wow, Art's Tamales...I haven't had those in years, I'll have to come back again and do a separate post on them. They make great tamales.
Okay, I just picked up our order and thought we'd eat it in the picnic area back here.
I chose this table to dine at and I think I made a pretty good choice, if I do say so myself and I just did, so let's all just shut the fuck up and get down to business.
Here's the components for today's Hot Dog War. It's shock and awe time people, time to start the unwrapping of the dogs.
The chili cheese dog looks promising and I like the chili to cheese ratio, let's try it out.
Well, this was just okay. Not horrible, but kind of bland. The chili could have been a little tangier and I don't even taste the cheese.
I got the Tater Tots with cheese for a palette cleanser and the Tater Tots were nice, tasty and cooked to a crispy perfection, but just like the toppings on the chili cheese dog, the cheese was bland and tasteless.
The chocolate shake here was superb, I think it's best to order the ice cream treats here at the Ice Cream Shack.
Uh, oh...
Yellow generic mustard. Well, on the bright side, at least no beans came in to play in today's weenie wars. See you all tomorrow.
Hot Dog War Status
The Hofbrau House hangs on to the crown in this battle. Next week is the final week and they’re going up against The No Wake Zone. I’m warning all of you now, things could get bloody next week which is alright, I’m just praying for a break from this generic mustard!
Hot Dog Rating
One and a half Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles. One thing this war has taught me is that it’s a safer bet to order an ice cream treat at an ice cream shack rather than a hot dog. You live and you learn! And then you live and let die.
