There’s a spot over on Willow Knolls Drive where a lot of second chances seem to be happening. It’s home to Oliver’s Pizza & Pub North, the second Oliver’s restaurant in this town. And then there’s The Second Chance Church, which used to be The Second Chance Nightclub. You can read about how that building got a second chance and went from a happening night spot to a thriving church by clicking here and reading the MBIP post from two years ago: This Used To Be...Second Chance Nightclub—Now It’s Second Chance Church.
Ann and Thom Van started attending services at Second Chance Church a couple years ago after Ann had surgery that was supposed to be a simple operation, but things got complicated—it wasn’t so simple after all and Ann couldn’t reuturn to her full time job as a nail technician. She had a dream of opening up her own consignment shop around the same time that the church decided to buy another part of the building. To make a long story short, Ann, Thom and another Second Chance church member, Amy Shorthair all joined forces and Feels Like Home Consignment Shop was born and the birth of this shop is just another second chance that’s happened on this spot on Williow Knolls Drive! The shop had a soft opening a couple of months ago and last week was the Grand Opening. I’ve heard some good reports about this new shop and since it’s just minutes away from MBIP World Headquarters, I thought we’d go check it out. To the MBIP Mobile!
Off we go, as I mentioned, this shop is just minutes away from MBIP World Headquarters and before you know it, here we are! According to this sign, we need to exit, stage left...
And head down to Second Chance Church and there’s Feels Like Home Consignment Shop right next door!
Let’s head on in and see what’s happening inside! Wow, the place is impressive looking! I love the wood and brick and the overhead fixtures are really cool! In the second photo from the bottom are the owners, Thom Van and Amy Shorthair and in the bottom is the manager of Feels LIke Home, Ann Van holding the rough and ready security dog, Rosco!
Let’s start out our tour of the store by checking out the front counter. As you can see it’s loaded with treasures from vintage jewelry and watches to collectible dishes and other assorted knick-knacks. The display case is so packed with items you could spend the whole shopping trip here, but let’s take a look around other areas of the store.
There’s so much to see in here! From antique Coca-Cola serving trays to a fine silver tea set to a rare Laurel and Hardy figurine of them riding a three wheeled bicycle. Check out the antique radio console and there’s even some Liberace 78 RPM records to accompany this time-traveled piece of furniture! I love the collectible glassware on the table and my favorite is the vintage A&W root beer mug! That brings back memories!
As you can see, they have purses hanging on display (many of them Coach purses, no less!) and there’s clothes, but they also have a great selection of furniture and home furnishings on display.
I really like some of the artwork hanging on the walls. Ann told me that a lot of the inventory comes from estate sales and people bringing in items they want to put up for sale in the shop.
There’s more to look at in this area off from the main room. I really like the antique wooden desk and two things on the desk really intrigued me and that was two copies of collectible hard-cover books. These are rare copies of Gone With The Wind and Titanic. That’s what’s fun about browsing around in shops like this, finding unusual treasures where you never expected to find them!
Here’s a shot of the back of the store. This is a brand new consignment shop, so if you want to find some real deals and vintage treasures, stop in before the word gets out!
Thanks to Ann, Amy and Thom for a fun tour of Peoria’s newest consignment shop, it was fun looking around and it feels like home in there! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
