Okay, it’s the seventh month of the year, the fifth day of that month and our sixth week in the MBIP, A Year In the Life Of A Sandwich food tour. So it only makes perfect sense that we go to Kuchie’s On The Water to sample their signature, Moby Dick sandwich...right? Well it does to me and...hey...what’s that noise over at the door...
Someone’s knocking and check out the wall next to the door, that looks horrible blank, I need to put something up there, that’ll be fixed by the next time you see this, now let’s see who’s knocking at the MBIP World Headquarters door...
It’s Dave Edmunds! Well, I’m going to quote you from one of your own songs, Dave, “I hear you knockin’, but you can’t come in!” Sorry, Dave, I don’t think you have an American driver’s license and we need a ride today, so we’re going to have to say ta-ta to you and...
Say hello to this guy! It’s Scott Turley, MBIP pal, Contributing Writer and most importantly today, MBIP Wheelman! It’s time to hit the road to this week’s sandwich destination, Kuchie’s On The Water!
And we’re off on a sunny, yet somewhat cloudy day, which is the way I like it! As long as there’s at least 50% cloud coverage, there’s good odds of staying in the shadows, which is where I prefer to be! And we here are at Kuchie’s On The Water! Wow, look at the freaky-deeky mermaid there! I think we’ll just scoot on by her and walk the plank and head inside to...
The bar! I love the bar in here! It’s like a Tiki bar that’s got a good touch of Mardi Gras madness thrown in for good measure! And everybody here is always super-friendly and proof of that is Jill and Kelie doing double-duty behind the bar and serving up an ice-cold beer while flashing a couple of wonderful smiles!
And here’s the beautiful owner of Kuchie’s On The Water, Jan! Great to see her again and she told me I could wander around with the MBIP camera and take as many photos as I want, so let’s make like Dion and start wandering around!
There’s a spacious dining area in front opposite the bar and I love the Cheap Trick tablecloths on the tables! On the other side of the bar are sturdy, well-polished wooden booths and there’s a mini Tiki bar located on the other side of the room. And check out the sign, there’s live music here every Tuesday starting at 5PM and that’s tonight! Brian Dennison is playing tonight, so if you want to keep the 4th of July festivities happening, stop by Kuchie’s tonight for live music and ten buck buckets of beer!
Okay, let’s check out the outside deck, this is a great summer location to come and hang out here! The deck has lots of tables and seating for dining and drinking and there’s a roof overhang if you’re like me and want to enjoy the outside but want to stay out of that rotten sunshine! Check out the view from the last shot, very nice!
And here’s the other special guests of the day, Amber and Joe! I’m always happy when they join the party and now we can really start whooping it up! Here’s our deck waitress, Carmele delivering some beers and check out that whizamajig in the pitcher of beer! Carmele told us it keeps the beer cold out here on a summer day, it kind of looks like a cancerous growth to me, but that’s just me, I’m sure! I kept my distance from that thing anyway...yikes!
Okay, time to start ordering some food here! As you can see, there’s a large selection of sandwiches to choose from but before we get into those, it’s time for...
Corn fritters! I love corn fritters and I’ve had these here before and they’re homemade, fresh, crisp and sugary on the outside and flaky and gooey on the inside and they are so delicious! Plus they’re served with warm syrup, just the way they’re supposed to. Hey check out the photo second from the bottom, is Scott doing a Kids In The Hall head crushing thing on Joe’s nose? Only his hand knows for sure and I don’t talk to the hand, so I guess we’ll never find out! But let me just say once again: Corn fritters: Delicious!
And here’s the man responsible for those wonderful and tasty corn fritters, the head chef here, Geno! Geno let me go back to the kitchen with him and meet the crew and in the fifth picture down, Richard, who’s the man responsible for the signature sandwich here, The Moby Dick! That’s the sandwich I ordered and here it is being prepared by Geno and Richard and before you know it, it looks like the orders for our sandwiches are up! Time to get back to the table...
As Carmele is serving up our sandwiches! I have to confess, I didn’t write down what everyone else ordered and I was putting this together last night and didn’t want to bug anyone on the 4th of July, so I’m just going to guess as to what these sandwiches are. They can correct me if they want! The first sandwich is Amber’s and it’s got a double bun thing going on and I’m kind of mystified by that! I see cheese, so I’m going to guess it’s some sort of chicken and cheese sandwich, but why there’s two buns for one sandwich confuses me and troubles me a little! The next is Joe’s order and I’m guessing that’s a burger with pepper jack cheese and the final one is Scott’s, which looks like some sort of fish sandwich. They all look delicious and the fries really look good too! And now it’s on to the sandwich of the week...
The Moby Dick! This is the signature Kuchie’s sandwich created by Richard, who we met earlier. The sandwich consists of a deep fried breaded fresh chicken patty topped with grilled jalapeno slices, smoky bacon and a generous amount of melted Swiss cheese. It’s topped off with tangy barbecue sauce and it’s served in a bakery fresh Ciabatta roll. This sandwich is so good! The chicken is crispy on the outside, but juicy as you bite inside and the grilled jalapenos and smoky bacon really mix well with it, giving the sandwich a spicy and smoky flavor. The Swiss cheese and barbecue sauce adds a creaminess and richness to the blend and the Ciabatta roll is nice and dense and holds the mighty sandwich together really well! This is a great and original sandwich that can only be had at Kuchie’s On The Water!
And now it’s time for the obligatory wave goodbye from this week’s Sandwichland! Thanks to everyone at Kuchie’s for great food, drink and hospitality and to Amber, Joe and Scott for joining me and special extra thanks to Amber and Joe for rescuing the MBIP Camera and saving me from a nervous breakdown! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
MBIP Sandwich Rating
Three and a half Dagwood Bumsteads—The Moby Dick Sandwich is really a satisfying, somewhat spicy chicken sandwich and I highly recommend it and I suggest you start out with an order of the Corn Fritters, those are some of the best in the world!
