I’ve got quite a history with Khaki Jack’s, Peoria’s only Australian themed pub and restaurant. I first visited Khaki Jack’s over six years ago when I was still living in New York City and doing my 365 bar crawl blog, you can read that post right here. That was a fun day and I met the owner of Khaki Jack’s, Tony, who’s a great guy and one of Peoria’s most friendly and cordial hosts. I’ve been a regular ever since. In fact, MBIP World Headquarters is within walking distance of Khaki Jack’s, so when I found out that they had a new sandwich on the menu I knew where week number 15 in this Year In The Life Sandwich Tour was going to take me. I was bound for a taste of the Australian outback here in Central Illinois right at...
Khaki Jack’s!
As we enter the front door, you can see by the sign that Khaki Jack’s kitchen is open seven days a week! Okay, let’s follow the hopping kangaroo on the next door to...
The bar! Right away I see a familiar face over in the corner, It’s the owner Tony, and he’s got a present for me, it’s a bendable bottle opener named Marty! How cool is that? Thanks Tony, it’s going to inhabit a place of honor at the MBIP World Headquarters!
There’s John behind the bar with an ice-cold beer and as I look down the bar I see a couple of Khaki Jack’s regulars...
Dave and Pete! Great to see both of them, the night is off and running now!
Tony gave me the okay to go behind the bar and get a shot of the dueling taps back there. I also got a picture of the Christmas Story lamp in the window and I also snapped a behind the bar shot with the MBIP Camera.
There’s the dining room opposite the bar and in the booth over at the wall are four women who traveled all the way from Springfield for a night at Khaki Jack’s! They are, (clockwise from far right): Julie Katie, Mary Ann and Carrie. Great to meet them! And there’s Joni, the cutest Khaki Jack’s waitress, keeping all the tables supplied with food and drink!
The back wall has a great Khaki Jack mural and if you look up above, you’ll find a treasure trove of items hidden up in the rafters including flags, beer signs, crocodiles and a land shark. Very cool!
This sign reminds me that we’ve got a sandwich to sample tonight, the Khaki Jack Kuban Sandwich! Tony told me it’s his take on a Cuban sandwich, that sounds good to me, I placed an order for one...
And here’s Danny back in the kitchen cooking it up already, how’s that for service? I love the fact that the bun for the sandwich is being toasted on the griddle and it smells so good back here, I can’t wait to try sandwich number 15!
So let’s go back to the bar and take a seat and wait for the sandwich to be delivered here! In the meantime, there’s a bucket of free peanuts at the bar for appetizers!
Okay, the table is set, I think it’s just about sandwich time!
And right on cue, here’s Danny with the Khaki Jack Kuban Sandwich! Wow, it looks fantastic! Tony filled me in on the ingredients and here they are: There’s Italian sausage from Raber Meats on the bottom, then a stack of fresh ham, crispy pickles, melted Swiss cheese and the bun is toasted and slathered in spicy mustard! It looks and smells so delicious, I was all ready to take a bite when...
Beth, who was celebrating her birthday offered to take a photo of me eating the sandwich, so I surrendered the MBIP Camera...
And took a couple of bites!
Wow, this sandwich is so delicious! It’s really a unique twist on a Cuban sandwich! The Italian sausage is both sweet and savory and really blends well with the fresh slices of ham. The pickles add a nice crunch to the consistency and the melted Swiss and spicy mustard combine even more rich and spicy tastes to the sandwich! This is really an original sandwich here in Peoria at Khaki Jack’s!
Meanwhile, back at MBIP World Headquarters, there’s the Bendable Marty Opener in its place of honor on top of the fridge! Thanks Tony, I love it! And thanks to Tony and everyone at Khaki Jack’s for a fun and memorable evening! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
