For our second beefy week on the seven month steak tour, I thought we’d get this week’s steak at Schnucks new grocery store which is located off of Knoxville Avenue. And no, I’m not buying a steak to cook at The MBIP World Headquarters, we’re going to eat the steak in Schnucks. The new Schnucks has a in-store cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve never been there, but my dad likes to go there and has really been impressed with the New York Strip Steak on the menu. He’s even more impressed with the price of the steak, it’s just fifteen bucks and it comes with fries!
One thing I want to do on this tour is find tasty steak in places you normally wouldn’t think of (don’t worry, I’m going to be going to all of the classic Peoria steakhouses too) and I’d say this definitely qualifies. Joining me this week is none other than the guy who discovered this steak, my dad, Jerry Wombacher! And he’s not only joining me for tonight’s steak dinner...
He’s driving too! Okay off we go to Fresco! I just realized that Fresco is a just a vowel movement away from being a Fresca and that brings back this Caddyshack memory (and it’s sure to please commenter, Chad Wallace!)
This is the second Schnucks in Peoria and it opened up last November. I’ve been going to the other Schnucks on University since I moved back here and I’ve been meaning to check this one out and so tonight is the night!
My dad leads the way in and it’s quite an impressive store! It’s a big store, but not so big you get lost in it, like another place I went to once! There’s the restaurant over there.
I like the Fresco logo with the giant fork. There’s a nice counter to dine at and there’s also an entire dining area with tables in front of the counter.
The menu hangs overhead and there’s the fifteen dollar New York Strip Steak that my dad is so impressed with! Nicholas was behind the counter and he not only took the order, he’s going to prepare it as well!
If you want beer or wine with your dinner, you can choose from the selection over here to the side of the restaurant. They have a good selection of bottled craft and imported beers including Heineken. Which brings back another movie memory! There’s my dad at the table we decided to sit at.
The service here is phenomenal, no sooner do we get settled in than Cameron, who’s working with Nicholas behind the counter, brought us our appetizer we ordered.
The appetizer we decided to split is the Tavern Chips and they were amazing! They’re house-made potato chips topped with large chunks of crispy, smoky bacon, shredded cheddar cheese and chives. Sour cream is served on the side. This appetizer could be a meal and it's just five bucks! The prices out here are kind of crazy inexpensive!
Alright, here’s Nicholas and Cameron with our steaks!
Cameron took a photo of the father and son with our fifteen dollar New York Strip dinners!
My dad substituted stir-fry vegetables for his fries but I threw healthy eating to the wind and got the fries. The steaks are huge and they come with a slab of seasoned “steak butter” you let melt on top of the steak. These steaks look fantastic! If you just stare at the plates, you’d think you were in a classic steakhouse and not in the middle of a grocery store!
There’s my dad digging in!
I like a little A-1 sauce on my steak and I always order it medium rare. Ketchup goes on the french fries and if you’re over 12-years-old the ketchup never goes on the steak! Okay, time to try out the fifteen dollar New York Strip Steak I’ve heard so much about!
This is such a tasty steak and it’s cooked to perfection! It’s tender, savory and so delicious! The seasoned steak butter adds a nice dimension of flavor to the meat. I have to say this is one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. It’s definitely the best steak I’ve ever had while dining in the middle of a grocery store!
There’s cake from the store’s bakery up at the counter, but we were too stuffed from eating that massive New York Strip Steak! Thanks to Nicholas and Cameron for the great steak and service and thanks to my dad for joining me, driving and for picking up the tab! He’s the best dad in the world! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
Steak Rating
Four Elsie The Cows—I never would’ve thought that such a fantastic New York Strip Steak could be had in the middle of a grocery store, but it’s there and I highly recommend it! I also suggest you go and try it soon, because once the word gets out about this steak, I have a feeling the price might go up!
