I went to The Hungry Moose back when I did my tenderloin tour and I really liked the old-school diner feel of the place and I’ve meant to stop back ever since that tenderloin trip. I just looked at that post and I can’t believe that was over three years ago! I looked at their menu on facecrack and saw that they offer a “build your own” grilled cheese section. I love grilled cheese sandwiches, so let’s go make a return trip to The Hungry Moose and build one of our own!
Here we are and that rotten sunshine is shining brightly and wrecking the outside photos. Even Photoshop can't save them! I took one from the side and another of the sign up top and decided...
To go inside and get away from this terrible brightness! Ugh!
It’s a little better in here, but as you can see, it’s still streaming in through some of the windows. I chose a table to sit at and luckily the nearby window is tinted with a Hungry Moose sign and a nice view of Farmington Road.
There’s the menu and the build your own Grilled Cheese section. You have your choices of cheese, bread, and you can add meat to the sandwich too. Plus you have to option to make it a “triple-decker” sandwich! I weighed the options in my mind and chose the official MBIP Grilled Cheese sandwich! And here’s Nikki, our pretty and friendly waitress who took my order and posed for the MBIP Camera. It’s really a friendly atmosphere in here!
Okay, while Nikki is getting the order to the kitchen, let’s take a look around in here.
I love all the moose photos and artifacts around the diner! I tried to get photos of all of them, but I’m sure I missed a few. But hey, I tried and that’s what matters the most!
You can even get your very own Hungry Moose t-shirt in here! What I like best about the shirt is how it’s blocking out that horrible sunshine trying to get through the window.
The sign says to, “Try some Pretzel bites with Beer Cheese. And just like magic...
Nikki appears with a plate of those aforementioned Pretzel Bites with a cup of Beer Cheese to dip them in! Both the pretzels and the cheese were warm and were a great appetizer on a winter afternoon. The pretzels were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and the cheese was creamy, rich and had just a bit of sharpness to it. Nice way to start out the lunch!
And now, here’s the main attraction, the MBIP specially built grilled cheese sandwich! I got them with an order of the onion strings because I remembered them from before and they were so good!
I’m happy to report they are still out of this world tasty! The onions are thin and lightly breaded, but they’re big on taste! The onions are sweet and it makes a nice taste contrast to the salty and savory breading on the outside. Delicious! These are worth the trip here alone, but now it’s time to reveal what the MBIP Official Grilled Cheese is built from...
Drumroll please...
Okay, here’s how I built the official MBIP Grilled Cheese and you can do the same if you want to, here’s what I got: I got the sandwich triple-decker style on Sour Dough bread with three kinds of cheese: American, Cheddar and Swiss cheese. Then to that I added sausage and ham. It looks and smells so good, time to take a bite...
Wow, it’s so good! The grilled bread has a nice coating of butter on the outside and the three cheese blend brings a creaminess and rich flavor to the sausage and ham which add nice amounts of salt and spice to the sandwich! And the onion strings compliment it nicely. There’s all kinds of ways to build a grilled cheese in here, but I recommend this one, it was so good! And in the end, all that was left was an empty plate!
And as you can see, most of the luncheon crowd has also disappeared along with my lunch! I saw a familiar face over by the cash register and it was Deanna, who cooked up this fabulous lunch and she also cooked the tenderloin from over three years ago! And she’s looking prettier than ever, so good to see her again! Thanks to both her and Nikki for a wonderful sandwich and a fun afternoon at The Hungry Moose! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
Sandwich Rating
Three and three quarters Dagwood Bumsteads—You can build a grilled cheese in all kinds of ways here, but I recommend the MBIP style, it was so good! And don’t forget the onion strings!
