This week I watched the movie, Saturday Night Fever and realized yet again what a great marriage of a film and a soundtrack that was. When it came out in 1977, I was a huge punk rock fan but I secretly loved this movie and the accompanying soundtrack to it. John Travolta was nominated for an academy award for best actor and it changed the course of The Bee Gees career who reinvented themselves with their songs that they performed and the ones they wrote for other artists. Here’s a half a dozen internet links to articles about the movie and the one that inspired it. And then, just like in the movies, you can see the MBIP Coming Attractions below that!
The Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night - The movie, Saturday Night Fever, was based on a New York Magazine article written by Nik Cohn called, “The Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night,” published on June 7, 1976. Here’s the article in its entirety.
Disco's Saturday Night Fiction - While the magazine article the movie was based on was presented as fact, it turns out writer Nik Cohn took the easy route and did it the old fashioned way: He made the whole thing up!
14 Facts About Saturday Night Fever - I love number 8 and the fact that it was real White Castle employees in the scene. And now I’m craving White Castle!
Saturday Night Fever Review by Roger Ebert - It turns out that Saturday Night Fever was Gene Siskel’s favorite movie. Roger Ebert liked it too and gave it four stars in this review of the film.
Fever Pitch - This is a great article about the movie written by Sam Kashner in the December, 2007 issue of Vanity Fair. And I love the title of the article!
Saturday Night Fever Pizza Gif! - Boy does this ever typify Brooklyn!
Last night I had the best time at the Lock And Key Burlesque “Wish’t I Was In Peoria” show at The Apollo Theatre! If you missed the sold out show, I have exclusive photos! I was the only one allowed to take pictures, so tune in tomorrow to see those! Tuesday, Bob Gordon and I went on a little mini road trip for the 40th week of the MBIP “A Year In The LIfe Of A Sandwich” food tour. Wednesday I’m heading back to get Wiggy with Ferdinand’s Wigs, Peoria oldest and only wig shop, now in a new location! Thursday I might do a, “Can I Eat My Lunch In Here?” segment, but I’m not saying where it’s going to be, so check that out. As usual, on Friday I have no idea what I’m going to do and now I’m going to go work on tomorrow’s post. This shit never ends! Have a funny and runny Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
