When I started this year-long sandwich tour, there was one place I knew I had to go to and that is Dave’s Pizza. I had a sandwich there called a “Zilla” when I was doing my year of pizza food tour and it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had! It’s hard to believe it, but that was over three years ago! I’d say we’re overdue for a visit and a Zilla, so let’s hit the road, Jack!
And we’re off to Bartonville at a cruising speed of 37 miles per hour! Zoom, zoom!
Here we are at Dave’s Pizza and just in case you forgot why we’re here...
This sign reminds us to try a Zilla! That’s the plan, Stan!
I love the little bar in here and you enter through the Howard Sprague-like bachelor pad beaded entry-way. I’m wondering if anyone will get that reference, I’m guessing maybe Chad Wallace will, we’ll see later!
There’s the bar and Elizabeth is the pretty bartender for the evening! Nice to meet her, now it’s time to order sandwich number 48!
I knew I wanted the Zilla, but thought I’d look at the menu anyway. As you can see, they have a nice selection of sandwiches here, but I have to get the Zilla. Actually I got the half Zilla because the last time I got a whole one and there’s no way to eat all of that!
A row of lights and a single fan hang over the bar.
There’s the quartet of beers on tap and the pictures in the bar range from Led Zeppelin to St. Louis Cardinals to an autographed picture from Charlie Daniels. He signed it for Bob who was on duty as bartender our last visit three years ago.
Here’s the main dining room with highly polished wooden tables and a row of booths lining the far wall. They now have gaming machines in the back, those weren’t here last time.
Meanwhile, back at the bar the Zilla is served up by the owner of Dave’s Pizza, Dave himself! Great to see him again!
This sandwich looks as good as I remember it from three years ago! It’s got ham, salami mushrooms, onions, green peppers, spiced ground beef, cheddar cheese and it’s topped off with their homemade pizza sauce. This is like a smorgasbord in a sandwich!
This is one delicious sandwich! There’s so many flavors in it and they all compliment each other nicely. And the bread is hot and homemade on the premises. This is definitely a unique and tasty sandwich and a meal unto itself!
After I finished the mighty and meaty Zilla, Elizabeth took a photo of Dave and I at the bar. Thanks to Dave, Elizabeth and everyone at Dave’s Pizza for a fun evening and a delicious sandwich!
Sandwich Rating
Four Dagwood Bumsteads—This is one monster of a sandwich and if you’ve never had one you definitely need to go and try it out! You can only get it at Dave’s Pizza and it’s well worth the trip to Bartonville to sample it.

Bonus Photos: Dan’s Birthday Presents From Urban Artifacts and A Creepy Doll Head From Amber and Joe!
Last week I wrote about how I was invited to a birthday party on Monday and I went to Relics to get a birthday present. Well, the party was yesterday and the birthday boy is Dan! Here’s the two presents that I got for him, a vintage Circus book with creepy photos of clowns and a 1988 Chicago Cubs program. Thanks again to Gina for helping me pick the gifts out and Happy Birthday, Dan! Hope to see you next time I’m in Chicago!
Dan wasn’t the only one who got presents yesterday, I went to the party with my friends, Amber and Joe and they gave me this creepy doll head! I love it and placed it next to my Beatles Butcher album in the MBIP World Headquarters. Thanks Amber and Joe, I’ll treasure it always!
