We started this sandwich tour last May and have travled through every season in the year and now as we’re winding down to the end of this between the bread tour it’s just about summertime again! And that means that a Peoria warm-weather tradition is upon us: The outdoor luncheon grill at Alwan and Sons Meat Company. I don’t think we’ve had a grilled sandwich outside on this year-long sandwich tour yet, so let’s go grab one at the Alwan and Sons Meat Company!
This is my kind of day! It’s really nice out and there’s lots of cloud coverage to hide that rotten sunshine from wrecking everything! I got to Alwan’s and the grill was open, but very crowded, as you can see! So I decided to...
Go inside the store for a few minutes and maybe the crowd will thin out a little when we get back outside. I’ve never been in here and it’s very nice inside. And I made one happy discovery: Free cheese! It was delicious and a nice pre-sandwich appetizer!
There’s cases filled with the famous Alwan and Sons meats and on the walls is some Alwan history. It’s the previous Alwan owners and the three brothers running the meat empire are below. That's Brian, Pat and Joe, Jr. Maybe we’ll meet them today!
I love the pink pig that’s grazing up near the ceiling and there’s some nice historical photos of The Alwan Meat shop from years gone by. And check out that Observer cover story on the Alwan family!
Okay, we’re back outside and as you can see, the line is still fairly long, so let’s get in it and hope it moves quickly. I’m starvin’ like you know who over here! The menu is strategically placed on the Coke machine and I think I’m going to try the Ribeye sandwich!
The line moves fast and we’re up and ready to order. They’re really busy back here, but I still got these two pretty women to pose for the MBIP Camera!
Suddenly...salad! It’s not all meat served here, there’s also fresh salads and pasta dishes here at the grill.
But meat is the main attraction here and I snuck back to get a few shots of the two grills in the back. Everything looks so good and it’s there’s a great barbecue aroma in the air! And as I got back on the other side, I met one-third of the Alwan Brothers, Pat! I got my sandwich and then...
It was over to the condiment station to dress it up. They’ve got ketchup, mustard, relish plus barbecue and steak sauce to slather your sandwich with! The thing that impressed me the most here was the onion machine. I’ve never seen one of these, you twirl a handle and fresh onions fall onto your sandwich. This pleased me to no end!
As you can see, the condiment table gets a crowd around it and one of them told me that he’s a fan of the MBIP Blog! That’s Greyson and he told me enjoys the blog and so I took his picture. That’s the way things work here, thanks for being a loyal reader, Greyson! You have wonderful taste in sandwiches and blogs!
One thing I didn’t know they offered here is freshly squeezed lemonade! That’s Jim squeezing and serving up the tasty lemon drinks. Okay, it’s time to eat!
A lot of people get their sandwiches to go, but there’s a whole line of picnic tables over by the outside wall, so I thought I’d eat there and have a little picnic. There’s my lunch, I got the ribeye sandwich, a bag of Kitchen Cooked potato chips and a giganzo glass of freshly-squeezed lemonade. Okay, time to dig in!
Here it is, the star of today’s blog, sandwich number 46, a grilled ribeye sandwich hot off of the Alwan grill! There’s a birds-eye-view of it and then a shot of it with the condiments I put on it. I added mustard and some steak sauce and of course those onions from the magical onion machine! The sandwich was so good! The ribeye is a thin cut and really tasty! It was grilled perfectly and nice and juicy. The bun was really fresh and it was slightly steamed from being wrapped up in the foil. A very delicious sandwich and it’s a fun experience too!
The lemonade was great and refreshing too! If you’ve never tried the Awan grill, stop by for a quick barbecue lunch and don’t forget to check out the onion machine! I love that thing! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
