As I’ve noted here before, this year marks the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love and 1967. There was so much great music that came out that year. The album that gets the most chatter when this year is brought up is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, but there was plenty of other great albums that were released in 1967. Below I’ve got links to six of my favorite albums from 1967 that aren’t Sgt. Pepper and then below that are the MBIP Coming Attractions for next week.
The Who's 'The Who Sell Out' - The Who Sell Out is a great album and kind of an overlooked album by The Who. This article is kind of a “Point/Coounterpoint" look at the album. Pete, you ignorant slut!
The Enduring Mystery of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘Surrealistic Pillow’ - Surrealistic Pillow was the second album by Jefferson Airplane but the first with Grace Slick singing with the band. Two of the band’s best known songs, “Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit” were on that album.
50 Years Ago: The Byrds Grow Up on ‘Younger Than Yesterday’ - This is the album that Chris Hillman really shines on and started taking the band into country rock.
Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced': 10 Things You Didn't Know - Who knew Jimi Hendrix was a stickler about people not being late! Maybe Mitch Mitchell should’ve tried this for an excuse: “Excuse me for being late, Jimi, but I was kissing the sky.”
Track by Track: 'Something Else by The Kinks' - This is a nice review of each song on this groundbreaking 1967 album by The Kinks.
Album Review: “Headquarters” — The Monkees (1967) - Some people might think it’s blasphemous to include The Monkees on this list, but those people are fucking idiots! The Monkees were a great band and on this album they played almost every note themselves and wrote a lot of the songs as well. It was the number one album for one week in the summer of 1967 till it got knocked out by four guys from Liverpool!
Last night I went to Blacksmith’s Steakhouse in Washington, Illinois with my friends, Colleen and Kelly and we had a great time at this restaurant which just re-opened in this location a couple of weeks ago. Tuesday is the halfway point of the ten weeks of ice cream tour so tune in to see where the chilly treat happens this week. Wednesday will be photos from the Peoria Riverfront Museum’s Eclipse party that happens tomorrow. On Thursday we’ll have a video that I still have to find and while I’m not usually doing a post on Friday these days, I will have a quick sneaky peeky look at the Peoria Irish Fest that’s going to happen next weekend! So stay tuned for all of that, have a funny Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
