It’s hard to believe, but it’s been just a little over 36 years since MTV first aired on cable TV. The date was August 1, 1981 and it was pretty revolutionary concept at the time: A 24 hour channel devoted to music videos. I remember it well, because Peoria was one of the first cities to get MTV, New York and L.A. didn’t get it till later. I’m assuming it’s because we’ve always been a test market town. I watched it religiously for years until it slowly stopped playing music videos and reality TV took the network over. Below are six links that take you back to the original and exciting beginnings of a TV channel that changed the way we listened to music. Below that are the MBIP Coming Attractions for next week!
Birth Of An MTV Nation - This is a wonderful oral history from Vanity Fair of how MTV began. The best is how it was basically invented by ex-Monkee Mike Nesmith and how he just walked away from it because he said he didn’t want to be part of a TV channel that was just commercials for records.
The Golden Age of MTV — And Yes, There Was One - An NPR interview with the authors of, I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum.

25 Fun Facts You May Not Know About MTV And Its History - Some interesting facts in this article but the most interesting thing to me is the glaring fact error in the first sentence! Can you find it?

We’ve got a big week this week here at MBIP! Last night I went to a Mexican restaurant in East Peoria I had never been to called Lorena’s. It’s been there for ten years and I had a mucho grande dinner! Tuesday we continue the ice cream tour and we did our second annual Big Chill ice cream drink tour of four restaurants that specialize in ice cream drinks. My friends Amber and Joe were the judges and you can see who they picked for the best ice cream drink of the evening! Wednesday is going to be a unique twist on the “Can I Eat My Lunch In Here” theme, because someone actually invited me to have lunch at their place of business! Tune in to see who invited me over and what we have for lunch! Thursday will be a video day and this week we’re having our monthly “Thirsty Third Friday" post and it’s going to be a special one! We’re having our Fourth Annual Amber Birthday Celebration Bash! It’s happening at W.E. Sullivan’s and there’s going to be guests, party favors, a pin the tail on the donkey tournament with prizes, a Trefzger’s cake and a very special guest! Amber’s birthday parties have been a highlight on the MBIP blog for the last three years and this one might just be the best one yet, so you’ll want to see the highlights of this party. Okay, this is a big week, so I have to get ready for it! Have a wonderful and funderful Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
