Okay, it’s January 2nd and that means it’s time to put all of that holiday crap behind us! Time to get back on schedule and getting back on schedule for this Tuesday can mean only one thing: It’s time for the 11th week of steak in our mighty and meaty seven month steak tour! This week I went to a popular place for steaks in Peoria Heights, Jim’s Bistro. They have some great steak selections and one of them is a little different take on steak. So let’s go and start this Spinal Tap inspired week of steak!
Here we are at Jim’s Bistro on restaurant row in Peoria Heights. It’s currently about 49 degrees below zero out here so let’s get inside!
Ah, it’s nice and toasty warm in here! I’m here on a Saturday night, but since Sunday is New Year’s Eve, it’s not as crowded as usual. There’s plenty of open tables and booths, but I think I’ll take a seat at the bar!
And just as I settle in, the friendly bartender on duty, J.T. brings a drink over to take the remaining chill out of the air! He brought a menu, but I already knew what I wanted so I placed my order. Right after I placed my order, Rebecca came over and said hi. I met Rebecca and her husband John last October at the Jukebox Comedy Club when I went to see Tom Green performing there. Great to see her again!
Joey and Nicole were seated next to me at the bar and we had a nice chat about Peoria and the art community in this town. Joey’s does abstract sculpting and Nicole told me she works for a company in Morton called, Unit Trac and I told her I’d give them a plug on the blog. So here we go: A big giant plug for Unit Trac! Hooray! Wonderful to meet both of them!
Here’s the quintet of beers on tap at Jim’s Bistro, a nice selection!
I love the atmosphere in Jim’s Bistro. It’s cozy and low-lit with cool artwork on the walls. Hey, I think I see a couple of familiar faces over there at the end of the bar...
It’s the owner’s of Jim’s Bistro, J.D. and Julie Comfort! Always great to see them and catch up on things and talk about the past. Julie and I both went to Bergan High School together and Julie was in my cousin Mary’s class. If you’re reading this Cuz, Julie sends greetings from Jim’s Bistro!
Meanwhile, back at my end of the bar, it looks like it’s just about time to dig into our eleventh steak dinner!
And showing off his perfect timing once again, here’s J.T. delivering the meal! Time to dig in!
Before we get to the steak portion, here’s my side dish, an order of Dauphinoise potatoes. I had never tried these before and they were so delicious! It’s thinly sliced layers of potato with cheese and a rich cream sauce inside. Really tasty and somewhat decadent! Now it’s on to the star of tonight’s dinner...
The steak! You don’t see steak salads on too many menus around town and Jim’s has a top-notch moo inspired salad on the menu. It’s a generous plate of greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and crumbled blue cheese topped with a grilled steak kabob and slices of grilled Portabella mushrooms. This way you can tell everyone you just had a salad for dinner and you’re not really lying!
This is such a flavorful way to enjoy steak! The kabob has big chunks of ribeye steak and there’s also grilled onions and peppers making each bit a different taste sensation! The steak is so tender and tasty! An added treat is the grilled Portabella mushrooms that have a great steak-like flavor to them as well. This was such a delicious and satisfying way to enjoy steak!
After dinner Natasha and her friend Peter joined me at the bar. I met Natasha at the Tartan Inn last April and it was great to see her again! I got a trio of photos of her, from the top: Natasha with her friend, Peter, Natasha with Geoff who prepared tonight’s wonderful steak salad and Natasha in heaven after she found out that Jim’s has Erdinger on tap! What a great smile and a fun way to end this eleventh week of steak on our meaty journey! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
