I know this is kind of out of whack, the steak tour posts are usually on Tuesday, but the MBIP Mobile had a setback on Monday and so this got pushed to today when I was scheduled to do the semi-weekly People of Peoria segment. Well, steak beats out People of Peoria so that’s going here today and next week I’ll do the People of Peoria thingy here. Okay, onwards and upwards with today’s post!
-------------------
I realized this week that we haven’t had a steak dinner at a diner yet on this meaty tour. That's because like so many things in our modern-day culture, old-school diners seem to be a vanishing species. There’s not many of them around anymore, but Pekin has one of the oldest diners around and that diner Is Cobbler Corner. So I decided that we’d travel to Pekin to have a steak dinner at Cobbler Corner and enjoy some old-school diner atmosphere on this 24th week of steak!
Here we are on the road to Pekin on kind of a gloomy-doomy day. Despite yesterday’s yearning for spring post, it still hasn’t sprung and it’s a cold and cloudy afternoon. But look over there to the right, it’s an oasis from this dreary day, it’s...
Cobbler Corner, one of the oldest diners in the area. Let’s just pray this guy isn’t filming in here and step inside and let the 24th week of steak begin!
This place never changes and I love that. I settled in at a window table and this is our waitress for the day, Ashley armed with an iced tea and a beautiful smile. How perfect is this? I had already looked at the menu online and decided to try the sirloin steak because that’s one cut of steak I haven’t had yet on this tour.
I love the Smucker’s Jelly holder, I’ve never seen one of these and for some reason it fascinated me. There’s my window view of the world going by on 8th Street in Pekin, Illinois at 1:37PM on a Wednesday afternoon. Turning the other direction that’s the view of the diner from my table.
I went over to peruse the menu on the wall and discovered something that should thrill MBIP friend, gumball counter and commenter, Chad Wallace: They list Mac & Cheese as a vegetable! Now that’s one vegetable I think he could swallow. Well we’ll find out in the comments section later!
There’s another window seat that faces the parking lot. This is the best seat in the house, the corner booth, surrounded by paneling and a couple of faux oil paintings done in the classic TV style of Bob Ross.
Every old-school diner has a pie and dessert showcase and here’s Cobbler Corner’s featuring their homemade pie and of course cobbler.
The kitchen is in the back of the diner and it looks like Ashley is picking up our order now, so let’s head back to the table!
I started off with a cup of chicken noodle soup. I love chicken noodle soup and this was really delicious. Ashley told me it’s homemade right down to the noodles that are made from scratch in the diner. Their were big chunks of chicken floating in the tasty broth and this was a great start to our steak dinner.
And here’s a birds-eye-view of this week’s steak dinner. As I mentioned earlier, I got the sirloin steak with an order of hash browns and it comes with a roll. Let’s dig in!
We’ll let the steak sit for a few minutes while we try the hash browns and the roll.
That’s really a generous portion of hash browns and I decided to take a bite of the roll to start this dinner off and it was really fresh and didn’t even need butter. The hash browns were crispy on top and buttery and soft beneath. They were very tasty. Now on to the main portion of the meal...
The steak! In honor of Grillmeister MC, I added some A-1 Sauce and pepper on top and sliced away. It was tender and cooked to perfection. Very juicy and flavorful and this was a wonderful afternoon meal. My only complaint is that there wasn’t a cot to take a nap on afterwards because I was happily full and ready for a beef-induced nap!
After lunch Ashley introduced me to Tracie who’s worked here for over 30 years! She told me that the current owners, Mike and Sophia have owned Cobbler Corner since 1991. Before that it was Sherman’s and then The Red Wagon. She wasn’t sure how long this building has been standing here, so I need to research that some time. But not today because I need to hurry home and catch a nap before work! Thanks to Ashley, Tracie and everyone at Cobbler Corner for a fun afternoon and a delicious steak dinner!
Steak Rating
Three and Three quarters Elsie The Cows—The steak was cooked perfect and delicious and don’t forget to order the chicken noodle soup, it’s the best I’ve ever had!

The 100th Tarter Source Podcast!
As I reported last Sunday, I’m going to be on the 100th episode of Steve Tarter’s PJ Star podcast, Tarter Source this afternoon. I’m having lunch with Steve around noon, so I’m guessing it’ll happen around 1:30PM and it’ll be streamed live on the PJ Star facecrack page. It should be a lot of fun, so I hope you can tune in and enjoy the live shenanigans between Steve and myself! If you miss it, I'll post the link later tonight on the MBIP facecrack page.
