Well, it’s that time here on the blog to have a palate cleanser from seven months of steak and then we’ll announce the next food tour. This palate cleanser is going to be a mini road trip and whenever we mention road trip here on the blog, there’s a knock on the door and this time is no exception to that rule...
Wait a second, why am I at the door? This is like some weird Twilight Zone thing happening! Oh wait, it’s because I’m driving myself on this road trip. We’re traveling to Morton, the hometown of MBIP pal, Contributing Writer and Wheelman, Scott Turley, so it doesn’t make much sense for him to have to travel here just to go back to his town, so I’m driving myself there. I’m kind of annoying with that camera, aren’t I? Okay, let’s go hit the road to Morton!
And baboom, here we are being welcomed by Nestle’s to Morton. Susie’s is just down the road from here. I’ve driven by this place but I’ve never been inside. Scott and I have talked for a long time about coming here and now here we are, in fact there’s Scott right there in front of Susie’s...
So let’s go in and take a look inside this tiny hot dog hut!
It’s cozy inside and Scott told me there’s always a line and sure as shit on a shingle, there’s the line.
As you can see from the menu, it’s not hard to make a decision in Susie’s. It’s pretty much either a hot dog or a taco. There’s Susie, the owner who takes your order at the front counter. She’s really nice and told me that the place turns 31-years-old on April 8th, next week! Scott and I placed our order and there’s Susie and her helper putting it together back in the kitchen.
There’s two tables in here and that’s Ryan and Cody over at that one. When I asked them if they’re regulars here, Susie laughed and said Ryan has been coming here since he was a little kid!
There’s lots of interesting things on the walls here at Susie’s and here’s a sampling of some of them. The top photo is the Velvet Freeze that used to be in East Peoria, that’s where Susie honed her hot dog skills! The next photo is Susie on the left and her boss from Velvet Freeze in the middle with another co-worker on the far right. Then there’s a framed fan letter to Susie’s and if you order them with everything you get mustard, chili and onions. Next is a model of Susie’s and below that is a newspaper clipping from last year about the 30th anniversary of Susie’s here in Morton. And at the end is a customer’s piece of art celebrating that anniversary.
And just in case you forgot, “everything” includes the tantalizing trio of mustard, chili and onions!
That’s exactly what Scott got on his two chili dogs. He’s getting ready to dig in...
And whoomp, there he goes, man bites dog!
I got two tacos and Scott told me it’s rumored that Susie has the old Pepe Taco recipe. Let’s open this up and find out!
Truthfully, I don’t really remember what the old Pepe Taco recipe tasted like, but these are sure tasty tacos! Okay, now that our palate has been cleansed, time to reveal the next MBIP Food Tour! Ringo, I think you know what to do here!
Thanks, Ringo and now it's time to announce the next MBIP Food Tour!
What the cluck? We’re embarking on the longest food tour yet as next week we begin a thirteen month tour of eating chicken in and around Peoria. This will include fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, chicken soup, barbecued chicken and anything else that contains chicken. The only thing we’re not doing is chicken wings because we’ve already done that.
If you have any chicken suggestions, please leave them in the comments here or on the MBIP facecrack page. For the first stop, we’re hitting an historic chicken place right here in Peoria, stay tuned for the first stop next Tuesday! This is going to be one motherclucking fun food tour!
