Okay, we’re just about two weeks away from the big show! There’s still a lot of loose ends to put together, I have to get prizes for the prize give-away at the after-show party at Kenny’s Westside Pub and I’m still working on the stories for the show.
Right now I have the introduction and the first story down pretty well. So my goal is to get the next two stories down these next two weeks and get everything else good to go! Next week I’ll tell you about the prizes but this week I’m going to give you the names and a little explanation about the stories I’ll be telling.
The Stories In The Marty Monologues
1. Introduction
This will start the show after some pre-show tunes spun by our DJ for the evening, DJ Juan Goblin and the opening song by Sarah Marie Dillard and Brandon Mooberry. I’m going to explain my thoughts about the show and also ask a few favors of the audience, which I’ll go ahead and ask in advance right here.
The first thing I’m going to stress is that while I’m telling the stories on stage, please don’t yell stuff out at me. Some people have asked if it would be okay if they added to the show by calling out to me and that would not be good at all! The stories aren’t really scripted, but I am rehearsing them and there’s a rhythm to them and if people are shouting back at me it would totally break that rhythm and hurt the story-telling. So laugh, applaud, giggle, but please don’t be heckling from the audience seats.
The other thing is taking photos with a camera or phone. I’ll give everyone a chance to take a photo at the beginning of the introduction when I take a few photos of the audience. Then while I’m on stage telling the introduction and the three stores following, if everyone could put their phones and cameras away that would be great. I think it would be distracting to have people taking photos during the stories. However after each story, DJ Juan Goblin will be playing music while I make a sandwich for a lucky audience member and you can take photos during this time. So basically no photos during the story times, take all you want while the music is playing and I’m making a sandwich.
2. Confessions of a Complete and Unmitigated Asshole
This is actually two stories woven into one. Both of them involve incidents where I worked in New York City and show how I can be a complete and unmitigated asshole. The two stories are guaranteed to get what I like to call, a nice “guilty laugh.” Both stories also use death as a punchline and they definitely fall into the category of dark humor.
3. The Weird Day When the Sky Turned Brown
Everyone has a story about where they were and how they found about the horrific happenings on September 11th, 2001. Well, I was in town when the shit went down! I was living in New York City when the planes took down the World Trade Center Twin Tower buildings on September 11th. Everyone in New York has an interesting story about that day and this is mine. One unusual factoid about this story is that I slept through a good portion of it and I’ll tell the weirdness in what it’s like to wake up to a national tragedy just a couple of miles from where I lived at the time.
4. Cold and Bitter Words of Wisdom From David Johansen
I was a big New York Dolls fan back in the day, so imagine my complete surprise and happiness when a friend of mine told me that David Johansen, the former lead singer of the New York Dolls wanted to meet me! I’ll explain how this happened at the show, but he was doing a show in his Buster Poindexter alter-ego at The Bottom Line and put my friend and I on the guest list and then we got to go hang out with him after the concert. He was a great guy and it turns out we had a friend in common and he told me a great story about this guy from a night when The New York Dolls played a show at CBGB’s. And then he gave me some cold and bitter words of wisdom that will close the show.
Then Sarah and Brandon will play a closing song and then we all head over to Kenny’s Westside Pub for the after-show party with FREE chicken wings and prizes will be given out!
Once again, you have to buy tickets in advance and there’s still some left. Ticket prices are $15 for one and $25 dollars for two and you can buy them at these following fine locations: Acme Comics, Kenny’s Westside Pub, Lit. on Fire Used Books and Relics Gift Shop.
The show takes place at the elegant Apollo Theatre on Main Street, Sunday, September 30th at 7PM. I hope to see you there!
