Unless you’ve been under a rock and not paying attention, last summer Popeyes got a ton of press about their new chicken sandwich that they rolled out. The sandwich was launched in July and by the end of August they had completely sold out of them.
In September they had a BYOB campaign and I played along and made the MBIPBYOB sandwich and it was really tasty and delicious.
Well, the Popeyes chicken sandwich is finally back, so let’s go and see if it lives up to all of the hype that has been heaped on to this fowl sandwich.
Here we are at Popeyes on Glen Avenue. As the sign says, the chicken sandwich is back, let’s go in and try it out!
I ordered at the front counter and in a few minutes the sandwich was served up to me.
I sat at this table and there’s my view from where I’m sitting. I got the chicken sandwich with an order of the Cajun Fries.
Let’s try the fries out first.
Okay, these were quite disappointing. They were bland and borderline soggy. Let’s hope the sandwich is better than this side item!
I got the spicy version of the chicken sandwich, let’s take it out and have a little inspection.
I have to say, it looks and smells wonderful! I’m usually not a mayonnaise person, but this spicy mayo looks appetizing and there’s some pickles beneath the crispy chicken filet.
And as you can see, it’s a big sandwich, let’s take a bite and see if this lives up to the hype!
I really didn’t plan on being impressed by this sandwich, but I have to say that it is one tasty and delicious chicken sandwich! The spicy mayonnaise has a nice sharp zing to it and the chicken is crisply battered on the outside and plump, juicy and tasty as you take a bite.
I always say that the bun can make or break a sandwich and this buttery, toasted brioche bun really makes this chicken sandwich a delight.
It definitely lives up to the hype, but after I ate it, I thought that one thing could really take it over the top. And that one thing is cheese!
So I drove to Schnucks and got some Boar’s Head 3 Pepper Bold and Spicy Cheese.
Then I went back to Popeyes and got another sandwich at the drive-though window and brought it back to the MBIP World Headquarters Kitchen.
I put the sandwich on a baking sheet, took off the pickles and put them in a bowl and then added slices of cheese to the sandwich and put it under a broiler to melt the cheese.
Once the cheese was melted I put the sandwich back together and I can’t describe how tasty and delicious this sandwich was with the spicy and bold cheese added to it!
Chicken Rating
Four Dixie Chickens—The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich definitely lives up to the hype, but if you want to take it to an even higher level, get it to go and add some cheese to it! It’ll take to to a level that’s out of this clucking world!
