I’m excited because we’re starting a new food tour and this is going to be a sweet seven week journey. I’m going to be sampling doughnuts at seven different locations. At six of the locations, we’ll be sampling two doughnuts and one stop we’re just having one specialized doughnut and all this will be explained as we move along.
I thought I’d start to the tour at Peoria’s newest doughnut merchant, Tadoughs Donuts which opened up in Tanglewood Center about a year ago. I’ve been meaning to stop in and today is the day!
Off we go to start this sweet doughnut tour!
Well, we’re off to a shaky start on this doughnut tour!
I went in and there were two women working and neither of them had heard of MBIP and kind of looked at me like I was nuts when I asked if I could take pictures in there and do a blog on their business.
I don’t think either of them really knew what a blog was.
I gave them a card and said a lot of people would see it and the General Manager said she didn’t feel comfortable on having me in there unless the owner was there and gave an okay.
She asked me to come back when he was there and I told her that I would just go somewhere else if they weren’t comfortable with me in there. I told her to have the owner call me if they wanted to be included on this tour.
I always say that doing this blog is kind of like improvisational journalism. Sometimes you have to play it by ear and just keep moving along. I decided since the newest seller of doughnuts wouldn’t let me do a blog post, well then let’s just go to the oldest doughnut merchant in Peoria…
Trefzger’s Bakery!
They’ve been selling baked goods and doughnuts since 1861 here in Peoria, so this is actually the best place to start this tour!
Sometimes things fall in place right before your eyes! Let’s go in and start this tour for a second time!
Here we are inside this spacious and iconic Peoria Bakery!
There’s some of the baked goods on racks and they have Trefzger’s t-shirts for sale in here. Nice!
I love the historical photos and the other articles about Trefzger’s Bakery on the wall over here.
Okay, time to look at the baked goods on display in here and look for our first two doughnuts of this sweet tour!
One thing I should note is that it’s about three in the afternoon on a Saturday and they close in about an hour and then they’re off for Sunday and Monday, so the inventory is low at this time of the week.
As I looked around I was afraid that maybe they had sold out of their doughnut supply for the week, but then I found a small island of doughnuts at the end of this case!
Hooray, we’re in business! Suhweet!
Mattie and Grace were working behind the counter and they said they’d put the doughnuts on display so I could get a photo of them. That was very nice of them to do!
The doughnuts are made in-house they look sweet and delicious!
Okay, I chose the first two doughnuts of this tour and decided to eat them at this table over here!
Let’s get settled in and check out the first two doughnuts of this baker’s dozen doughnut tour.
Here’s the two I selected, the one on the left is a chocolate based doughnut with vanilla icing and to the right is a traditional doughnut with a layer of sugar icing.
Okay, let’s dig in to these sweet treats!
I tried the traditional doughnut first and it had a sweet outer layer of icing and a hint of maple flavor. It was a cake doughnut and it was so delicious, light and fluffy!
It wasn’t overly sweet and it was a simple and delightful doughnut! We’re off to a fabulous start here at Trefzger’s Bakery!
The second doughnut had a chocolate cake foundation and was topped with a sweet vanilla frosting.
Like the first doughnut, it wasn’t overly sweet and was a little more dense, but still had a nice fluffy texture to it.
These were tasty, delightful, homemade doughnuts!

Doughnut Rating
I’ll give the first two doughnuts of this sweet tour a high rating of three and a half Mr. Donuts out of four!
Trefzger’s Bakery is known for their cakes, cookies and other baked delights, but you should also remember that they have delicious doughnuts and the selection is even better if you get there earlier in the morning and in the week!
But you can find delicious ones in there even at the last minute like I did!
Thanks to Mattie, Grace and everyone at Trefzger’s Bakery for a sweet and fun start to this seven week tour of doughnuts!
