Sally Timms is a musician who is best known as one of the members of The Mekons, a band that started out as one of the pivotal English punk rock bands back in 1977. She joined the band in 1986 and has also had success as a solo artist. I always loved The Mekons.
When I first moved to New York, my friend Susie had a party at her apartment house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn so I could meet some people. One of the first persons I started talking to was an attractive blonde with an English accent who’s first name was Sally. We got along well and she was all curious about me moving to New York from Peoria and told me it took a lot of balls to do that. So I asked what she did and she said she was doing window dressing for Bloomingdales and that she was also a musician. I asked her if she was in a band and she said, “Yeah, I’m in this band called The Mekons.” Well, then my jaw hit the ground when I realized it was Sally Timms! I told her I was a big fan, she seemed flattered and embarrassed because I knew who she was and we proceeded to get shitfaced at the party and had a great conversation!
Two years later I interviewed Sally for fishwrap and we discussed rock ‘n roll magazines at a restaurant on St. Marks Place in the East Village. It was a fun night and a relaxed interview where we talked about rock ‘n roll magazines, music reviews and MTV and VH1. My favorite part of the interview is where we talked about The Mekons Spinal Tap moment in Q!
