A couple of week’s ago I started a new series here at MBIP where I’m letting my fingers do the walking through the Peoria Yellow Pages to pick a place to visit, one letter at at time. Today we’re up to “B” and while perusing the pages that are yellow, this ad jumped out at me:
Trefzger’s Bakery! I’ve been meaning to stop there as it’s been a couple decades since I’ve been in that bakery. It’s the oldest bakery in town and it’s a well-deserved stop, so it’s off to the MBIP mobile we go!
Out into the freezing cold on yet another horrible winter day. Have I told you...aw, forget it, even I’m sick of saying that!
There it is, off in the distance, an oasis of baked goods in the middle of this wintry mix, let’s park and start this MBIP Yellow Pages journey...and what’s really funny is that the song, Faithfully by Journey is playing on the radio. I held back on my thoughts about winter, but I will say here and now...I fucking hate that song!
Okay, we’re parked and the sign says, “Open.” Perfect!
They’ve been in business since 1861, but I don’t know if they've been in this building the whole time. I do know that they’ve been here since the ‘70’s, as I used to come in here then because this was the only place that was more baked than I was back in those days. (Rimshot.)
Here’s the front of the building. I had to stand out in the middle of the street to get this photo and I just got sprayed by a bunch of slush from a passing car. Ugh, have I told you how much...aw, forget it!
Okay, let’s go in and get a whiff of that great sweet bakery scent.
But let’s wipe our slushy feet first. The door mat looks like its gotten a lot of use this year.
Well, alright, don’t mind if I do!
Shit, I was hoping for B-52 so I could ask for a Rock Lobster, but what are you going to do?
They’re up to number 33, we’ve got some time, let’s go say hi to another customer in here.
This is Lana and she said she’s a regular in the store and that this place is her, “stress reliever.” Whoops, they just called number 34, we better start looking around in here so we're ready when our number is called!
Well now; this is just a punchline waiting to happen!
The pressure’s on, they just called, 35, but I’m just not a pie guy.
Cherry Strusel, what a great porn name! In fact you could make a porno title out of this sign: “No Nuts, Chocolate Covered Cherry,” Starring Cherry Strusel.
Wow, look at all those cakes hanging up on the wall near the ceiling. One earthquake tremor and we’d be right in the middle of a falling cake zone. That would be a bit of a sticky wicket for sure! Uh oh, they’re up to number 37...that's us, the pressure is officially at a zenith...
Cookies...
Turtle cookies...a dozen please...whew, that was close! This could be the premise for a new reality show: “Bakery Deadline!”
And here’s Chelsea expertly showcasing the aforementioned cookies. I do believe she’s got a future on the Home Shopping Network!
Always be prepared to wait in line here, but believe me, it’s worth it!
Krissy rings up the purchase and delivers change and a great smile!
And the cookies?
They’re delicious. We’ll see you all tomorrow!
