Live from Peoria, Illinois, it’s Saturday Night starring this week’s host, PoBoys with special guest stars, Amber, Jon, Bob and Betty and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. And now, please welcome this week’s host, PoBoys On Frostwood!
Off we sail into the heart of another chilly-willy Saturday night traveling at a spine-tingling speed of 39 MPH!
I was meeting MBIP pal and semi-regular guest star, Amber here at the recently opened PoBoys On Frostwood and we both pulled up in the parking lot at the same time. She's here and you'll see her very soon! The sign says open and so it's inside we go!
Warning: This place is not for boring people! I guess I better not bring up my collection of distilled water bottles in here or I might get thrown out of the joint!
There's the PoBoys logo on the inside welcome mat.
There's a really nice and elegant horseshoe bar that dominates the front section of the restaurant.
Here's a view of the bar from the other side.
Other people are joining us tonight, but they haven't arrived yet, so Amber and I thought we'd have a drink down there at the end of the bar to start the night off.
I told you Amber was with me and here she is looking pretty as always. And check it out, she called ahead and had them make coasters with her name on them! I gotta try that next time! She's always one step ahead of me!
The beers are served up by Jon, who we've met before here on the blog. The last time we saw him he was working at The Publik House in the Heights. Jon told us he's working full-time here and that business has been great. That's really good news as I always like to see a new local business thriving. Wonderful to see Jon again!
Amber and I both liked the textured wall here at the end of the bar.
Marek and Leslie were seated next to us and were fun to chat with. Marek is originally from Poland and moved to the states over twenty years ago.
The middle of the bar is really set up in a spectacular, lit-up fashion with an electric candelabra shining down over it.
Here's the seven varieties of beer on tap. Hey, check out the beer on the far right, Amber got them to name a beer after her! She just doesn't stop!
In addition to the draft beers, they have a large selection of bottled beer as you can see from the inventory in these coolers behind the bar!
The other guests have arrived and we've moved to a table where Paul is our friendly waiter. Here he is bringing me another beer. After that he took my camera...
And took a picture of all of us. Down at the end of the table opposite Amber is Jon, who was the microwave chef at Amber's birthday party back in September. Jon came along with his parents, Bob and Betty and it was great to meet them!
It was cool to see Jon again and wonderful to meet his parents. They're really fun to banter with and Betty is an author who has written several children's books including, "Critters LIke Me" and "Randall's Christmas Vision." Check out her facecrack page for more information on her books. Okay, I've got to wander around and get a few more pictures. I can never socialize too long, my work never ends!
There's a dining area opposite the bar with tables and chairs.
I love these ceramic jazz musicians playing in the windowsill.
There's a keyboard player tickling the ivories over here in front of the bookcase.
A longshot from the other end of the bar.
Meanwhile, back at our table...
The food has arrived! Jon, Bob and Betty ate already, so Amber and I ordered a few items to split between the two of us. These are Gator Bites and this is the third time in about six weeks I've had alligator!
This is a skewer of barbecued shrimp served on a bed of dirty rice. Both the Gator Bites and the shrimp were delicious, but the star of the show was...
The Gumbo! As good as it looks...
It tastes even better! You can read more about the food in the review below, but you owe it to yourself to get out here and sample this Gumbo. It's the perfect antidote for this arctic weather we've been having lately!
I thought I'd end the evening with an obligatory bathroom mirror shot. Thanks to Amber, Jon, Bob and Betty for coming along and making the evening so much fun! And thanks to everyone at PoBoys, the food and hospitality were fantastic and I will be back! Maybe next time they'll have a coaster with my name on it! We'll see you all tomorrow!
Our Meal
Jon, Bob and Betty had already eaten dinner, so Amber and I ordered up two appetizers and a cup of the Gumbo to split between the two of us. We ordered the Barbecue Shrimp Skewer and the Gator Bites from the appetizer menu and both were really tasty. The Gator Bites are tail meat from the alligator, breaded and deep fried. They’re served with a pepper jam dipping sauce that really compliments the Gator Bites perfectly and kind of stole the thunder from the alligator itself! The Barbecue Shrimp are black tiger shrimp that are coated in spicy creole butter and served on a bed of dirty Cajun rice. And yes, they were just as good as that sounds.
As delicious as those two appetizers were, the spotlight of the dinner has to shine on the Gumbo. Amber and I just split a cup, but it was so savory, spicy and satisfying it felt like we had eaten a trough of it! The Gumbo is loaded with chunks of chicken and andouille sausage along with rice and vegetables. You can order it extra spicy, which we did and I suggest you try it that way to. A real Cajun delight!
The name of the restaurant is PoBoys and they offer up seven varieties of the Cajun sandwich on the menu including: Crab Cake Po-Boy, Sausage Po-Boy, Gator Po-Boy and one called, Peace Maker Po-Boy which is half fried shrimp and half fried oysters with a Tabasco infused mayonnaise. I’ll have to try one of those on my next visit. You can check out the whole menu here.
SN Rating
Three and a half Galloping Gourmets—Tasty appetizers and Gumbo and I’m looking forward to trying some of the entrees on the menu next time.
