I don’t like to get political here on MBIP, but it’s hard not to this year because... well, it’s an election year and the two candidates are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Two candidates that are exceptionally good for media headlines, click bait and internet memes, so you really can’t ignore them unless you live under a rock. Since there’s no escaping this political media circle jerk, I thought it might be fun to mix a little politics with our year of the sandwich tour and so we’re going to do just that on this, our 19th week in The Year In The LIfe Of A Sandwich as we travel over to Big Behm’s Sports & Grill.
Here we are at Big Behm’s Sports Bar & Grill on University near Pioneer Park. My friends Amber and Joe have joined me for this Presidential Sandwich lunch and let’s go say hi to the pretty bartender over behind the bar!
Kristi’s doing bartending duty today and she’s the daughter of the owners of this place, Cathy and her husband, Tim A.K.A. Big Behm! I haven’t seen them since I was in here on a Saturday Night Cheeseburger almost three years to this date. Well, all that is about to change as...
Cathy appears! Great to see her and she just got back from Florida! Tim is still there on business, but Florida isn’t the only place that Cathy’s been lately, she’s also been a contestant on The Price Is Right! She was on the show, met Drew Carey and the models and what did she win, if anything? Well you can find that out this Thursday morning if you stop by Big Behm’s! The show is airing Thursday morning and Big Behm’s is having a special morning screening party at the bar starting at 9:30AM with doughnuts and coffee free at the bar! Stop by and cheer Cathy on! Check out the details at their facecrack page!
Amber, Joe and I grabbed a table in the dining area opposite the bar and we told Cathy and Kristi to pick out some sandwiches on the menu that they felt best represented this election year's candidates and then we’d have a private vote as to which one we like the best. While they’re busy preparing this Presidential Election Lunch, let’s take a look around in here.
Tables line the outer walls and in check out the sign under one of the many big screen TV’s in here: “Try Not To Suck.” Good political advice, but it’s a little late for this year’s candidates. And as you can see, the jukebox agrees with me!
I met Bob up at the bar, he’s a friendly regular here at Big Behm’s and has lived in this neighborhood since 1964! Wow, that’s back when Big Behm was just a little glint in his father’s eye! Great to meet Bob!
Here’s a shot of the back of the bar and the half dozen beers on tap. The nightly specials are listed on that board and here’s a shot from the other end of the bar.
Opposite the bar is a game room with a pool table, state of the art dart boards and other fun games for amusement and enjoyment!
And if you’re gaming tastes run more towards gambling, there’s gaming machines lined up on this wall here next to a brightly lit-up pinball machine.
As I made my way back to our table, Kristi is there with our order of appetizers!
We got cheeseballs, pretzels, mini tacos and Cathy brought us an appetizer they’re just trying out that’s not on the menu. They’re called, Cowboy Bites and they’re deep fried balls stuffed with cheese, jalapeno’s and corn and they are so delicious! All the appetizers are and on Monday they’re all half-priced!
And now it’s sandwich time! Cathy brought out these three sandwiches they picked for the Presidential Lunch Election here on MBIP. But wait a second...which is which?
Okay, here we go! The top sandwich is The Hillary which is the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and they chose that because Hillary can be a little cheesy at times. The middle sandwich is The Donald which is the Aaron Krause Special and it’s a buffalo chicken sandwich. That was chosen because Donald can be hot-headed and the sandwich is also a shade of orange with the cheese on top! The last one is the Anyone But Donald or Hillary, which was chosen because we need something solid for our country! They might just sell out of that one! Okay, let’s flip the lids and take a closer look at these Presidential Sandwiches!
Oh my! That’s just a little frightening and I think they are all self-explanatory, so let’s get down to the business of trying these sandwiches out!
Amber sliced all the sandwiches up because she’s been dying to do this to each candidate at one point or another in this whole election year! Okay, they’re all sliced up let’s try them out!
Well, as opposed to the actual election, all of these candidates are really tasty and we’re having a tough time deciding who to vote for! They’re all really fresh and each has a unique taste. The Hillary (Philly Cheese Steak) is really a taste treat with lots of cheese, tender steak and grilled onions, The Donald (Buffalo Chicken) is juicy and spicy with the melted rich cheese adding a nice flavor to the mix and the Anyone But Hillary or Donald (Ribeye) is tender, savory and really tasty. It’s going to be tough to pick a winner, but we’re going to vote right now!
Sandwich Rating And Winner Of The MBIP Presidential Sandwich Election!
The Hillary A.K.A. The Philly Cheese Steak —Three and a half Dagwoods—The Hillary won in our sandwich election and at Big Behm’s it’s better known as the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and it’s cheesy with tender strips of steak and grilled onions on a bakery fresh bun. The sandwich is just $5.95 on Thursdays, so go and cast your vote then! Thanks to Kristi and Cathy for playing along and making it a fun and delicious lunch! And thanks to Amber and Joe for driving and coming along for lunch and extra thanks to Amber for being the cut-up at lunch and for taking Presidential notes for the blog! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
