One of my favorite movies of all time is, “That Thing You Do!” I don’t even know how many times I’ve watched this film, but I’ve never seen it on a big screen in a movie theater.
So I was thrilled when I found out that The Peoria Riverfront Museum was having a special screening through their Community Pix group. And I was ecstatic when the man presenting the film, Kelly VanLaningham gave me a personal invitation to this screening!
So let’s hightail it over to The Peoria Riverfront Museum!
Here we are at The Peoria Riverfront Museum in downtown Peoria on a beautiful spring evening in this year of 2024!
Let’s travel up these stairs and head inside and see what is happening behind these four doors in front of us.
Here we are in the Peoria Riverfront Museum’s impressive lobby. I love the massive globe and the spaceman on display, but they really need to get their ducks in a row in here. Sheesh!
The theater is down this hallway and there’s the concession stand. There’s the three friendly people on duty at the stand and I know Joel, who’s in the middle and I couldn’t get the other’s names. But it was great to see them and thanks for letting me take your photo!
Here’s the man who’s presenting tonight’s film, Kelly VanLaningham! Kelly’s screening tonight’s film through the Community Pix program here at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and you can read about this program by clicking right here.
Great to see Kelly and thanks again for inviting me to this fun occasion and screening!
I ran into some familiar and friendly faces here in the lobby and they are from top: Tony and Elaine, Brad and Tim and Michelle.
And now we’re in the theater and it’s just about showtime! First Kelly went on stage to welcome everyone and introduce the film.
Next a giant John Morris appeared on the screen and welcomed everyone to tonight’s movie.
Okay, the film is just about to start. One thing I do in my life is give myself kooky challenges that if I don’t complete successfully, I beat myself up over it and have self-loathing for the next 27 and three quarter hours of my life.
My challenge tonight is to sum up this film in photos that I take from my seat in the theater.
If you haven’t seen this film, it’s about a rock ‘n roll group that forms in the 60’s and goes from a garage band to playing state fairs to having a hit record and then becoming “one hit wonders.”
Here we go, let’s see if I can pull this off. Here’s my photo recreation of…

I feel like I met and successfully completed last night’s photo challenge! I loved seeing this film on the big screen and you should definitely check out Community Pix!
After the film, I took a photo of this unruly group that had assembled around tonight’s film presenter, Kelly VanLaningham!
Great to see and photograph these fabulous smiling faces!
On my way out I ran into Tom and Kathy and it was great to chat with them! Tom is doing an archival project on WWCT (you can listed to my interview by clicking here) and you may remember him from this MBIP post. He’s working on a book based on his interviews and I’ll give updates and this project moves forward.
Great to see them and everyone else at this wonderful and fun evening at the Peoria Riverfront Museum!
