I’ve been doing this blog for over twelve years here in Peoria now, so you’d think I’ve seen about everything there is to see in this city, but every now and again I hear about something that I never knew existed in this town of ours.
This was the case when I found out that there’s a place called, Pets For Seniors, that specializes in pairing senior pets with senior people. There’s also a sister gift shop that’s part of this Pets For Seniors project and I wanted to find out more, so I went and not only found some stuff out, I took a bunch of photos too!
Keep on scrolling and you too can find out about this intriguing Pets For Seniors shelter and gift shop.

Pets For Seniors
Here we are at Pets For Seniors and their sister store, Forever Home Resale Shop in the Sterling Plaza. Let’s go in and check this place out!
You just follow the cat paw prints down to the Pets For Seniors Shelter. I love that sign!
Susy is the Director of Operations here and she said things are going great. She said there’s a nice selection of cats in here all ready for adoption.
This operation was started by Barb Cathey 25 years ago and it originally operated out of her house in Brimfield. It was originally a shelter exclusively for older cats available for adoption to senior citizens, but in 2015, they’ve added Pets For Saving which includes younger animals for adoption. In addition to cats which live here in this shelter, there are also dogs available which are in foster homes.
You can hear the whole history by watching this video from WEEK 25.
Susy graciously invited me to wander around and snap photos and that sounds like a purrfect idea!
This guy was lounging on the sofa in Susy’s office and he was looking quite content and comfortable!
Here’s three of the friendly volunteers who come in to help with the shelter and the cats in here.
Check out the cat in the last photo, it looks like he’s got a fake mustache on!
I love it in here, this is like a pussycat paradise! It’s not a sterile atmosphere at all, like some animal shelters.
It’s a nice friendly and comfortable atmosphere and the cats love it in here. There’s a couple of feeding stations.
And there’s oneo of the cats taking advantage of that aforementioned feeding station!
Pets For Seniors is open to the public on Tuesday and Saturday from 1pm to 3pm. If you’d like to make a special appointment, just call or text: 309-446-9721. More information is available on their website.
Here’s the kitchen and laundry room area.
The volunteers take time to play with the cats and give them lots of attention, which is nice!
All the cats seem to really be at home here, but if you’d like to give one or two of them a forever home, they’d love that! As you can see, there’s a nice selection to choose from in here.
As I was leaving, this guy was still lounging on the front sofa, but he’s been joined by a friend! Nice!

Forever Home Resale Shop
The Forever Home Resale Shop is a non-profit organization/store which sells a large variety of items and all of the profits goes to help Pets For Seniors Shelter. It’s located in the same building as Pets For Seniors and it’s in the front of the building.
It’s run by volunteers and here’s three of them that were minding the shop when I strolled in: Olive, Christie and Jan.
They were very friendly and welcoming and invited me in to take some photos of this unique and fun shop, so that’s just what I did!
The store is stocked by generous donations and if you’d like to read more about the store, just click here.
The store is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 4pm.
As you can see, this place is large with several rooms and it’s loaded with all kinds of cool and one-of-a-kind items.
There’s everything from pet supplies and clothes, books, CD’s, fun signs, dishes and jewelry. This is kind of like a 3D version of Amazon in real life, just like the old days!
This is a fun and friendly place to shop and as I noted earlier, all the profits go to help Pets For Seniors Shelter.
